"WANTED"
what an excellent word!
what a great feeling!
(we rescue unwanted horses and
help them become WANTED horses)
ONE HUMAN HEART & MIND AT A TIME
Lily, Rocky and Minerva came to live at DoubleHP Horse Shelter near Crooks, South Dakota, about a year ago. We rescued them from starvation.
Thanks to all of you
who have made such a difference in their lives.
And in the lives' of our other rescued horses too.
It's what we do: We make a difference --
-- one horse, one rescue, one story,
ONE HUMAN HEART & MIND AT A TIME
Like most of the horses we rescue from starvation, Rocky and Minerva were owned by their "breeder" at the time of their rescue. Lily was owned by the person who bought her at the salebarn where Lily's "breeder" had dumped her off.
This does NOT mean we are against horse breeding. Quite the opposite. We have great respect for the successful, reputable, compassionate horse breeders of our area.
We know how difficult it is to make money in the horse breeding industry these days. And we want horse breeders to make money selling their horses. Because that means they are raising really nice horses.
But there are way too many people still allowing their already unwanted, neglected horses to reproduce. And, unfortunately, these horses usually produce more horses just like themselves -- unwanted and neglected. It's not the horses' fault. It's the irresponsible humans' fault. These horses would not be unwanted & neglected if their humans were responsible horse owners.
The American Association of Equine Practitioners estimates that it costs between $1,800 and $5,000 each year to keep a horse.
That is a minimum of $1,800.00 per horse per year!
Please consider that figure when you think about becoming a horse owner.
And think about it even more carefully when you think about breeding a mare for the purpose of selling the offspring FOR PROFIT.
It takes a very special combination of a very special mare and a very special stallion to make the offspring special enough to turn a profit for the horse breeder these days.
And it is really best left to the Pros. The people who already have a successful, profitable, humane breeding program in place. The horse breeders who provide proper nutrition, shelter, deworming, vaccinations, dental & farrier care, and age-appropriate training for the horses they raise.
That is the kind of horse breeder we support.
Not the kind who raised Rocky and Minerva. Rocky and Minerva had never had their hooves trimmed, never had vaccinations, they were full of worms, were without food and water, and Minerva had never been handled.
And Lily, who was emaciated & dehydrated and had every point of neglect you can think of. Her friend died of starvation before the rescue.
Lily, Rocky & Minerva ended up lucky though. Because they ended up with us.
But thousands of other horses every year in the United States are not so lucky.
They are born unwanted and neglected, with very little chance of ever becoming wanted and well-cared for.
Please just really think about the big picture of our nation's unwanted-horse population, before you make the decision to breed your mares.
Every single day, I think about our Saint Nick and Jack Frost. I am so glad we were able to show them some kindness before they were humanely euthanized and sent off to live with the Sky Herd. They both died as a result of their severe neglect. Saint Nick was owned by his "breeder" at the time of his rescue (though we didn't know that until after he was euthanized, because the owner had left him tied to a fence in a road ditch, on Christmas Eve Eve. And the Sheriff's Dept. had to do some investigating to find out who the owner was). Jack Frost was owned by a person who bought him at the salebarn where his "breeder" had dumped him. The new owner then fenced him in with no food. And by the time we were called to rescue him, he was so wasted away he could not even get up without the help of us and our sling.
Their stories are very sad. You will find them here as you wander through our website.
